How to Host an Online Trivia Night
You don't need a studio, a webcam grid, or a paid subscription to run a great virtual trivia night. With a shared screen and a phone in every player's hand, you can host one in five minutes.
1. Pick the right topic
The single biggest predictor of a fun trivia night is matching the questions to the people in the room. A round about your group's specific fandom, team, or inside-joke universe beats a generic pub quiz every time. With ReignFree's custom round generator you give it a topic in plain English — "Studio Ghibli films," "early-2000s emo bands," "our company's product launches" — and it builds a 10-question round in seconds.
2. Lock the format before you start
Ten questions, fifteen seconds each, multiple choice. That's the format that keeps energy up on a video call. Longer rounds drag; open-ended answers create judging arguments. Resist the urge to over-engineer the rules.
3. Share a room code, not a link to install something
Friction kills trivia nights. The host's screen shows a four-letter room code and a QR. Players scan or type it on whatever device is in their hand — no accounts, no downloads. If someone drops, they rejoin with the same code.
4. Keep the host on one screen
On a video call, share the host screen so everyone can see the question and the live scoreboard. Players answer privately on their own phones; the host's screen is the shared "TV." This is the same loop Jackbox popularized — and it works because the host doesn't have to read questions aloud or tally scores by hand.
5. Run two or three short rounds, not one long one
Mix a curated category with a custom round about your group. Variety keeps people engaged longer than a single 30-question marathon. Between rounds, take a beat — pour a drink, roast the leaderboard, queue up the next topic.
